REVIEW: [SOME BY MI] AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner

diciembre 15, 2018

¡Feliz domingo!
♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

Happy SI think this was one of the reviews I wanted to write before the 2018 ends, and it was the hype for this toner was really big, such that in less than a month of its release, all the big and small Korean cosmetics stores (national and international) had already pre-sale or physical, just like that. It was the boom on Instagram and all the beauty accounts around there were talking about it. And is that mantimes we fall into advertising products that promise us the goldpot when you want to achieve perfect skin. A commercial that promises to leave the face clean, without pimples or annoying blackheads and all this in a period of 30 days ... It sounds grea!t Right? But do you remember that a few days ago I told you that there were some products that I didn't like at all? I'm sorry to say that this was the first one I was referring to 😅. Then no more drama, I leave here my experience with this popular toner.

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

The toner comes in a box in green, white and black colors. There is very little information in English, which is repeated on 2 sides of the package. It has some illustrations that suggest that its function is intended for pore care, whitening and moisturizing the skin, in addition there are some small notes of its functions and pH level.

On the remaining 2 sides of the box, all important information is written in Korean, such as description, ingredients, directions and content (150 ml).

On the cover you can see a printed logo of "skin friendly ingredients", while the bar code is printed on the bottom.

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

Something I consider important to tell you is that this brand, like many other cautious as Elizavecca, launch their products with a silver holographic stamp on which a scannable code is printed. This code guarantees that the product you are buying is original and that it is owned and approved by the company (because, in effect, it's relatively new in the market and there are already some stores selling counterfeits). In the case of Some By My, this code can be scanned with an application called HiddenTag

You can see below the seal with the code blurred (I've modified it to prevent malicious uses) and the images that my cell phone throws when scanning it with the Hiddentag application, indicating the product number (also blurred to prevent malicious uses) and the approval from Some By Mi that it is an original product.

Inside the box, there is a green bottle with a typography and colors similar to those in the box. And in the same way, very little information is printed in English and the most detailed is written in Korean.

The dispenser has a removable metal seal, and when you remove it you can see a small hole through which the toner comes out.

At the base of the container, you can see the expiration date printed in black letters.

The lid is thick, shiny and black.

After cleansing in the morning and evening, take an appropriate amount on a cotton swab, wipe it off along with the skin texture, and let it absorb lightly.

In areas with severe dead skin, moisten the toner on the cosmetic cotton and apply it to the skin. After 1 to 3 minutes, wipe it gently with the skin texture.

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

I'll be really honest and I'll say that from the beginning this toner didn't convince me at all, although I was curious that it had 3 types of exfoliating acids, and that made it sound attractive. Finally, I bought it during the discount season to see if all the wave of popularity that was there for it really worth it, and if it could be an option as an aid in the acne-prone skin of my brother who suffers from large and painful breakouts. After weeks having bought it, Liah Yoo included it in her video of super hyped products under the magnifying glass and this toner was severely criticized, and I was half-departed waiting for it to work but with the warning that maybe it wouldn't.

Theorycally, the ingredients can treat almost all skin types and have very few ingredients that could generate irritation on sensitive skin, and for oily or acne-prone skin would be beneficial to control sebum levels and decrease breakouts at the same time that the skin remains bright and moisturized. According to their advertising, taking as reference 28-30 days (4 weeks) for the cell renovation cycle, this is the period in which you must use it to see the change in your skin, so I tested it on my own skin and on my brother's acne-prone skin during that period and I recorded all the possible changes (that I'll give you a spoiler: they were not convincing for either of us).

This toner looks quite promising if you look at the list of ingredients, such as niacinamide (known for its anti-aging, skin-lightening, protective of skin barrier and anti-acne, can even be used by people with sensitive skin), witch hazel extract (known for its astringent, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties being widely used in acne problems), adenosine (which helps wound healing, has anti-inflammatory properties and helps repair the protective barrier of the skin) , sodium hyaluronate (helping to retain water in the skin, giving it a supple and elastic appearance), since all these ingredients help to deflate breakouts, brightening skin, repairing the skin barrier and moisturize it. And while it's true that it contains tea tree as indicated by the same packaging, the truth is that the essential oil is well-documented about its antimicrobial and anti-acne properties, not the tea tree leaf extract (included in the list of ingredients), although they are attributed antimicrobial, purifying and antiseptic properties, it's thought that they might not be as powerful as those included on the essential oil. Something similar happens with citric acid, which is proposed as an exfoliating acid but is used mostly as a pH regulator.

As for the exfoliating ingredients (chemical type), we find 3 representatives of 3 large groups:

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), represented by citric acid
  • Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA), represented by salicylic acid
  • Poly Hydroxy Acids (PHA), represented by lactobionic acid

Giving a brief review of my exfoliation basic guide, the chemical exfoliants break the bonds of the dead cells in order to remove them easily, generating cellular renewal and increasing the collagen synthesis. AHAs are more superficial and give a smooth appearance to the skin, so they are more used as an anti-aging and anti-acne treatment, but some can be quite irritating to the skin. BHAs work in deeper layers, and are used to treat congested pores and blackheads by having anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, however they are not suitable for people allergic to aspirin. And PHAs are superficial exfoliants, but they don't generate irritation like the AHAs and are recommended even for sensitive skin, besides that their use doesn't increase the sensitivity of the skin to the sun.

All these effects, combined with the physical exfoliation that is done using the toner with the cotton pads, sounds like a complete exfoliation that covers superficial and deep layers of the skin.

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

As for the toner description, it's liquid and colorless, and from the moment it leaves the bottle you can perceive a very pronnounced artificial mint scent (if you are from Mexico, you can associate it with the aroma of the sweet taffy that sticks on the teeth). In general, strong scents don't bother me, but this toner is too artificial and sometimes I didn't tolerate it (if you are sensitive to strong fragancess, it'll be better to remove it from your shopping list).

I also measured the pH with the test strips and threw values between 5 and 6, the same as that handled by Some By Mi (5.5), so it achieved the slightly acidic pH it promises.

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

There are quite a few things to say about the experience with this toner. Because I was trying another exfoliating product when this toner arrived to my house, I decided to postpone its use so I wouldn't alter the results of both products and my brother used it first for a month. At that time, he was emerging from a fairly noticeablebreakout  due to stress and he applied it as indicated by the box: using the cotton pads. He had never used chemical exfoliants and I demanded him to use sunscreen (remember that sunscreen should always be used!). It was from the third week that he told me that he felt that his skin was drying up a lot and for this reason he had to add more moisturizing creams to his routine, and that he saw that the breakouts of previous days were reducing but in return new breakouts appeared in places where they usually appear and it's more difficult for them to leave.

It was difficult for him to finish the fourth week with this toner, but he fulfilled the time established by the company and his skin worsened a lot. You could see more redness, dry and new and bigger breakouts. It was difficult for him to reduce breakouts, but he discontinued use as soon as the test period ended. I was quite surprised that his skin had this reaction to the product and in the first instance I related that maybe his skin was too sensitive and, since he hadn't used cosmetics with exfoliating acids, it had probably been a pronounced reaction to the active ingredients. But I cleared my doubts when I could prove it a month and a half later.

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

I had the chance to test it for just 2 weeks at the end of October but I had to suspend it, since during the beginning of November I was under constant stress and my skin became quite sensitive. The days I wanted to use it, when I was rubbing the cotton pads soaked in toner over my skin, it irritated a lot, so I suspended its use and decided to use it for a month as soon as my skin recovered. Finally, I went back to using it in mid-November and finished the testing period recently in the second week of December. Something curious that I noticed during this period is that you don't get the same results if you use it with your hands, you should use it strictly with the cotton pads (at least as far as firmness is concerned). I was applying it with my hands as I usually do with my toner and my skin felt much dryer and much more flaccid, it was like spraying alcohol directly on my face (when the toner doesn't include alcohol in its ingredients!).

To test its exfoliating effectiveness, I didn't use any other physical or chemical exfoliator during those 4 weeks that the product needs for work.

When I went back to using it for a constant period of time, I noticed quite a few changes in my skin. My skin looks more illuminated and a little firmer, although I didn't see any noticeable change in the appearance of my pores.

Similarly, the toner is more "balancing" than hydrating, and although it contains moisturizing ingredients, my skin remained dehydrated and began to produce sebum as nuts. I noticed this mostly at night, since before using moisturizing products my skin remained plump, juicy and with an acceptable amount of sebum in the morning. But as soon as I used this toner constantly, my skin shone bright, it felt very heavy with sebum and enlarged pores. And I know this happens when my skin needs hydration. I attribute it to Hamamelis extract because on previous occasions I used products with this ingredient and I felt that I was drying my skin a lot, but this toner is supposed to be moisturizing and there should be no problem with this sensation.

Other details I noted during that test period, I didn't observe any change in terms of blackheads. I tried it especially around my lips and in my nose, which are where deeper blackheads accumulate, but I didn't notice any difference. I even tried to leave the cotton pads for longer time in those areas and trying in superficial blackheads, but there were simply no changes.

And I was able to prove in my own skin (literally) what had happened to my brother. I suffer from hormonal acne although I had already managed to control it thanks to a good exfoliation and hydration, but this toner increased its appearance frequency. I understand that the exfoliating acids cause breakouts to come out faster by stimulating cell regeneration, but in my case they sprouted even in places where no pimples appear usually. You can see in the photos that in week 2 and 3 I had a problem with small breakouts on the side of my mouth (unusual) and that the one on my chin (more frequent) decreased, but a new one appeared that until today is taking time to disappear.

It is true that it dries out and diminishes the breakouts that you have when you start using it, but both my brother and I got new pimples in unusual places and it was difficult to diminish them.

This toner is quite strange because I hadn't had a similar reaction with similar acids before, but fortunately my brother and I used a lot of product because of the cotton pads and I'm about to finish it. From what I've seen on my skin and my brother's, I wouldn't recommend it as an exfoliant for beginners in exfoliating acids or for people with sensitive skin: first of all because of what I have already told you about the reactions I've seen and also because perhaps the effects it promises need more time to grant a real positive change in the skin. But I haven't liked the results in these 30 testing days, so it's a product that I wouldn't recommend and I would say that I prefer that the hype only stays on the Internet and not in my face.

¿LO VOLVERÍAS A COMPRAR? / WOULD YOU BUY IT AGAIN?

♥ ~ ★ ~ ♥

I don't think I'll repurchase it, since the results weren't convincing for me and I didn't like some details of the product (the fragance, the way of applying and the little hydration that it offers don't convince me at all). Similarly, I think there are better options such as PHA exfoliants or AHA like mandelic acid for people who want to start using exfoliating acids and don't want to expose their skin to unnecessary secondary reactions. However, although I wouldn't buy it, many girls have written to me commenting that this toner has helped them a lot to reduce pores or improving their skin tone, so I leave it to your critic and according to how well you know your skin.

What do you think of this review? Have you tried this toner? Remember that every skin is a world and probably you'll have better results than me with it. I just wanted to give my opinion about this product since all the reviews I've seen are in English or another foreign language and I wanted to publicize my results now that so many Mexican stores bring it to their shelves as if it were the Holy Grail and the definitive cure to acne. Personally, I prefer to focus on exfoliating with an exclusive product for that task, using toner in separate product and moisturize my skin, but the routines are individual and according to the needs of each one. And with this we finished the review today, I hope you liked it. I still have a pending reviews that I hope to upload before the end of the year, so be aware of the posts of this, your humble blog. I send you a hug and my best wishes! 😘

    No creo probarlo.

    Gracias por tu reseña!
